Preparing For Add Maths

Assalamualaikum and good day,

How has the new year been so far for all of you? Have you started working hard on your studies, or are you still in the 'holiday mode'? ( Since Chinese New Year holiday is coming soon). I hope that all of you have started revising, especially the Form 5 students who will be taking SPM this year. It's very important for you to start early, as studying last minute will more often than not causes problems instead of solving it. So for those Form 4 students who are taking Additional Maths, attached below is a file containing some basic practices for you to brush up your Maths skills before tackling the tough Add Maths questions. As for the Form 5 students, if you have been getting not so very good marks in Add Maths last year, this is a chance for you to examine your basic Maths knowledge, as the problem might have something to do with it.

Macam mana nak dapat A+ dalam Matematik Tambahan, Cikgu?

Semasa di sekolah, dari Form 4 sampai awal Form 5, Cikgu asyik dapat gagal untuk Add Maths. Diulangi - FAIL. Tapi subjek Mod Maths tak pernah pulak tak dapat A1 (masa tu belum A+). Jadi Cikgu sangat tak berpuas hati. Dan lepas SPM trial exam, cikgu Add Maths bagitau yang Cikgu tak payah risau sebab Cikgu mesti akan lulus dalam SPM punya. Hah?? Lulus je?!! Cikgu nak A1 lah!! (sebab nak dapat biasiswa, kenalah dapat A1 kan?). Lepas tu Cikgu terus ulangkaji habis-habisan (orang Kedah cakap pulun!). Akhirnya, masa dapat result SPM, tersenyum lebar Cikgu. Terpampang di slip result- Matematik Tambahan : A1! (Alhamdulillah dan ribuan terima kasih kepada semua cikgu dan kawan-kawan di SMSAH dulu)

Jadi pelajar-pelajar sekalian, tak mustahil sebenarnya untuk dapat A+ dalam Add Maths, walaupun anda mungkin asyik gagal, atau cukup-cukup makan je dalam result sebelum ni. Apa caranya?

1. Anda mesti bertekad untuk dapat A+ !!

Katakan awak seorang pelajar lelaki, dan ada hati kat sorang pelajar pompuan kat sekolah. Kalau awak nak jadikan dia ‘girlfriend’ (kecik2 dah nak ada gf kan), awak mesti sanggup lakukan apa saja untuk dapatkan dia, kan? Ini termasuk buat benda tak normal seperti tulis surat cinta berjela2 dan spray perfume kat surat tu sebelum pass kat posmen (member anda) untuk hantar kepada dia. Ataupun beli coklat mahal atau bunga (pakai duit mak) masa Valentine’s day untuk dia. Ataupun buat aksi ‘macho’ dalam kelas atau masa PJ untuk tarik perhatian dia,kan…? (Untuk student perempuan, terbalikkan situasi di atas).

Sama jugak dengan Add Maths. Anda mesti ada keinginan yang sangat kuat untuk dapatkan A+ dalam subjek tu. Dan selalunya atas sebab yang kukuh. Contoh, sebab nak dapat biasiswa ke universiti, atau sebab nak buat kejuruteraan masa degree nanti, atau sebab nak buktikan kepada mak ayah atau kawan-kawan yang anda juga seorang pelajar yang pandai, etc. Keinginan itu mestilah sangat kuat sampai sanggup lakukan apa sahaja yang diperlukan! Anda nak dapat A+ dalam Add Maths!

2. Anda mesti kuasai kemahiran dan topik asas Matematik!

Ini perkara pertama yang termasuk dalam ‘apa sahaja yang diperlukan tadi’. Kemahiran asas tu ialah: 

• Hafal sifir sampai sifir 12
• Boleh buat congak (tambah,tolak,darab,bahagi) mudah melibatkan nombor positif dan negatif tanpa pakai kalkulator

Kalau setakat nak kira 2x10+15 pun nak kena pakai kalkulator, tak payahlah berangan nak dapat A+ dalam Add Maths. Kalau belum kuasai, mula berlatih sekarang!

      

Topik-topik asas yang anda kena ‘master’ pula ialah:

•     Algebra
•     Persamaan Linear
•     Pecahan
•     Integer
•     Indeks
•     Koordinat dan Graf Fungsi
•     Trigonometri

Kenapa kita belajar Matematik sampai 3 tahun sebelum PMR? Sebab semua kemahiran di atas dipraktis masa tu. Dan semuanya digunapakai untuk jawab soalan Add Maths nanti. Untuk 7 topik asas di atas, Cikgu boleh kongsi macam mana nak kuasainya. Just ask me ok! Tapi mestilah buat 3 perkara di bawah!

3. Mula awal!

Ada juga sebab kenapa kita belajar Matematik Tambahan untuk 2 tahun, dan bukan setahun saja (atau lagi teruk, belajar last minit). Sebab subjek ni susah, dan secara purata setiap pelajar perlukan 2 tahun untuk kuasai semua topik. Jadi jika anda akan ambil SPM tahun depan, anda kena mula belajar sekarang! Jangan tunggu last minit! Minta cikgu, cikgu tuisyen atau kawan untuk tolong anda mula belajar. Lebih awal mula, lagi cepat kelemahan anda dapat dikenalpasti dan diperbaiki. Anda juga dapat cover semua silibus satu atau 2 bulan sebelum SPM, dan kemudian ada masa yang cukup untuk prepare dengan buat kertas SPM yang lepas, atau soalan-soalan trial negeri lain.

4. Latihan dan Berlatih!      

Belajar saja tak cukup, tidak adik-adik.. Anda kena berlatih! Selagi tak berlatih buat soalan, kita takkan tahu apa yang kita tak tahu, atau apa yang masih tak faham. Buat latihan yang senang dulu, lepas tu baru cuba soalan yang susah. Kalau stuck, tengok contoh soalan dan jawapan lebih kurang yang ada dalam buku rujukan. Jangan cepat give up! Banyak pelajar sebelum anda dah buat soalan yang sama, dan bejaya dapat jawapan. Maksudnya anda pun boleh dapat jawab juga! Kalau masih sangkut, bertanyalah. Subjek Add Maths perlukan anda banyak berlatih, sebab itu penting untuk mula awal!

5. Jangan takut bertanya!

    

'Malu bertanya sesat jalan'. Kalau dah dapat salah dan tak tau macam mana nak selesaikan satu soalan, jangan malu nak tanya. Kalau tak, nanti kesalahan yang sama diulang, markah Add Maths pun sama jugak tak naik-naik. Kita bernasib baik sebab di sekolah ada cikgu dan kawan yang boleh tolong. Kalau anda pergi tuisyen, tanyalah pada cikgu tuisyen atau tutor. Kebanyakan student takut nak tanya sebab takut salah, ataupun malu. Tak apa jika salah, yang penting dengan bertanya, anda akan tau macam mana untuk tak ulang kesalahan yang sama. Kalau rasa malu pulak, tu normal. Apa yang anda perlu buat ialah hanya buka mulut dan bertanya! Pedulikan rasa malu itu! Anda akan dapati yang takda apa-apa pun yang berlaku kepada tubuh badan anda selepas bertanya, sama ada kecederaan fizikal atau mental! Tanya lagi soalan sekurang-kurangnya 10 kali dan lepas itu anda akan dapati perasaan malu itu boleh diabaikan sahaja. Takde effect apa-apa pun. Bertanyalah!

      Buat semua di atas,dan Insya Allah A+ akan berada dalam genggaman anda. Anda juga boleh bertanya kepada saya apa saja yang tak faham dalam Add Maths, sama ada di blog atau Facebook Cikgu. Selamat berusaha, selamat belajar dan selamat mendapat A+ !

Tip Studi 'Last Minit' untuk Matematik Moden & Tambahan (SPM)

                     Satu bulan dari hari ini, peperiksaan SPM 2011 akan bermula. Adakah anda, pelajar-pelajar Tingkatan 5 tahun ini, sudah bersedia? Masih ada masa lagi untuk mengulangkaji dan Cikgu harap anda gunakan masa yang masih ada ini untuk membuat persediaan sebaik mungkin sebelum SPM bermula. Di sini Cikgu berikan tips-tips ulangkaji ‘last minit’ untuk Kertas Matematik Moden dan Tambahan. Semoga ianya memberi manfaat kepada anda semua.

1. Lihat analisis soalan-soalan SPM yang lepas di sini dan sini. Anda akan dapati jumlah soalan untuk setiap topik adalah lebih kurang sama untuk setiap tahun. Untuk pelajar yang tidak sempat habis mengulangkaji kesemua topik sebelum SPM, fokuskan usaha anda untuk mengulangkaji dan membuat soalan dalam topik yang paling senang dan paling banyak keluar soalan. Kebarangkalian anda untuk mendapat result lebih baik adalah lebih tinggi.

Benefits of Home Tuition

Many students choose to have tuition classes as it complements what they have learnt in school. During these tuition sessions, a student can do revisions and discuss with the tutor lessons that were not understood in school. On the other hand, many parents choose to send their child to tuition classes to improve the latter’s academic achievement while ensuring their time are not spent doing too many unproductive activities.

There are 2 types of tuition that students attend: a) Tuition centers and b) Home tuition, either at the student’s house or the tutor’s house.

In this post, I will explain the benefits of choosing to have tuition in your own home, in which a tutor will come to your house for the lessons.

1) 1-on-1 or small group concept

The main benefit of home tuition is the full attention received by student from a tutor.

Every student is unique, and not all students are quick at understanding the lessons being taught in school. It is also common for some students to not being able to comprehend a lesson as their mastery of the fundamentals in a particular subject is not strong. For example, a student may be slow at grasping a topic in SPM Add Maths for not having a solid understanding of the Index topic (a topic learned in Form Three). In some cases, a student may not fully understood a lesson that was taught in school because the teacher teaches too fast. The teacher might have to do as they are required to complete a subject syllabus within a period of time.

These reasons will cause students to eventually get left out, and it usually happens to those who are generally shy to ask the teacher what they do not understand in class. Most of the time, these students will end up getting disinterested and eventually give up all efforts to catch up with the lessons. It is not surprising that most of these students end up getting poor marks in examinations.

With having a home tuition, the full attention given by a tutor to a student will bring excellent benefits. A tutor can find out which part of a lesson a student does not understand. The tutor can then proceed to teach the lesson, repeatedly if needed, until it is understood completely. The tutor can then follow up with related exercises to enhance the student’s understanding. During these sessions, a tutor can also identify the weaknesses of a student that causes them to get poor marks in examinations. For example, a student might not able to do an Add Math question quickly and correctly even though the lesson is understood initially. After further ‘diagnose’, it is found out that the student might not memorize simple multiplications, or cannot perform simple calculations without using the calculator, or still confuse with operations involving fractions or negative numbers. Once these have been identified, a tutor can assist the students to improve themselves and avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future. For example, a tutor can show students techniques to memorize the multiplications table, or how to practice doing simple arithmetic without using a calculator.

With these practices, future sessions will slowly be less difficult and more fun once the students have mastered the key fundamentals. Home tuition sessions can also be a ‘safe’ environment for shy students to be more expressive and to ask more questions. When a student manages to solve a particular problem after being guided by a tutor, the student will find out that there is actually no harm in asking questions. These students will surely want to ask more, and in the process they will slowly build their self-confidence. Gradually, they will learn to overcome their shyness and be more expressive in the future.

2) Flexibility in having lessons

Home tuition is really flexible when it comes to the style of learning. A student can choose whichever topic he or she wants to learn, without having to follow a specific syllabus or strict schedules. They can choose to concentrate on topics they are weak at, and skip any topics they have already understood in school. These enable students (who will sit for an exam) to start doing past year or forecasted questions much earlier, while having enough time to discuss the answers with their tutor and to identify which parts or topics that they still have difficulty in. Students who performed well in major exams cited one of the reasons that contributed to their success were the sufficient exam-like exercises done, and the discussion they had with their teacher to find out how to correct their mistakes.

In terms of scheduling, home tuition enables student to have sessions on their preferred time and day. If they have to cancel session for some unavoidable reason, they can have those sessions replaced to any other day, thus avoiding students from missing any lessons.

3) Comfortability and Safety

Most parents living in cities do not have time to send and fetch their kids from tuition centers. With home tuition, students do not have to travel anywhere, thus saving parents’ time and effort. Parents also do not have to worry about their children’s safety and comfort as these are guaranteed when the sessions are being done in their own home. With home tuitions, parents are able to monitor their children progress closely. They can meet the tutor frequently and discuss their children’s academic performance regularly.

As a conclusion, opting to have home tuition brings excellent benefits. Students will receive the full attention of a tutor which guarantees improvement in academic results. Students will also enjoy flexibility in learning and scheduling, while at the same time parents' mind will be at ease knowing that their children’s comfort and safety are guaranteed.
